  • Cake pops are a perennial party favorite, especially when made to match the theme! Get creative and tailor this recipe however you'd like – the result will be a truly personal treat.

Ingredients

  • Box of cake mix of your choice
  • Frosting of your choice
  • Melting chocolate (your choice of milk, dark, white or colored white chocolate)
  • White sanding sugar

Special Equipment

  • Lollipop sticks
  • Mixing bowl
  • Waxed paper

Preparation

  • Bake the cake according to the instructions on the box. Once cool, trim off the edges so the entire cake is soft and moist.

  • In a large mixing bowl, crumble sections of the cake into small pieces using your hands or a fork.

  • Add a small scoop of icing to the cake; mash the cake and icing together. Start with a small amount of icing, as too much will make the finished cake pops too heavy and dense.

  • Continue adding small amounts of icing until the cake and icing mix evenly to form one batter. Using your palms, roll the batter into balls of equal size that are smooth and compact.

  • Melt your chocolate. While it's melting, stick the lollipop sticks into the cake pops; let them harden in the fridge for a few minutes. Once the chocolate is melted, dip each cake pop and let the excess chocolate drip off until the pop is evenly covered.

  • Place the cake pops on waxed paper to dry. Decorate them however you want – we like frosting, white sanding sugar, food-grade luster spray (found at most cake-supply stores), or white nonpareils on the chocolate while it's drying.
